Overview
The main feature of Fitbod and Alpha Progression is generating your strength training workouts for the gym. They both take some user input (past training history, fitness levels and workout goals) and use some fancy computer algorithms to generate your workouts for you.
One of the key differences between the apps is what gets generated. Fitbod generates your workouts session by session, and uses your previous workout to decided what muscle groups (and therefore what exercises) need to be incorporated into the next workout. Alpha Progression takes a different approach, and generates your whole training plan for you in one go, which you can visualize on a calendar built into the app.
Other than this key difference, the apps are very similar in functionality and appearence. Both are highly configurable, letting you modify the generated sessions in pretty much anyway you need, even adding / removing exercises while you are completing the workouts.
Fitbod has arguably the better user interface, with some nice visuals showing how fatigued various muscle groups should be. While Alpha Progression is more practicle, with a whole suite of graphs to allow you to track progress in everything including your 1 rep max, and increase/decrease in muscle size and body weight.
Alpha Progression is actually free to use as a basic gym logger, where you upgrade to a monthly subscription to access the workout plan generator and all the progress tracking tools. Fitbod requires a paid subscription to use after you exhaust your free trial. Both subscriptions are similarly priced, Fitbod is $12.99 per month compared to $9.99 for Alpha Progression.
Which is better? Fitbod or Alpha Progression?
Alpha Progression can actually be used for free as a basic gym logger, so if this is all you need then you probably won’t find a better app with the same level of configurability.
For beginners who are new to the gym, Fitbod is a good choice as the session by session workout generation keeps things simple and does all the heavy lifting (sorry for the pun!) for you.
Those who want to take their strength training to the next level might be better off with Alpha Progression. You get to see and adapt the whole training plan, and monitor your progress with the excellent range of graphs and body metrics measuring tools.
